Honey Sausage Breakfast Buns
Sweet yet savory breakfast buns will be the highlight of your morning.
INGREDIENTS
- For the honey glaze:
- 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup honey
- 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
- For the buns:
- 1-2 tablespoons oil
- 1 pound breakfast sausage, casings removed
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 roll of pizza dough (about a pound)
- 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese
- Chopped scallions for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish.
- In a bowl, beat butter, brown sugar, honey and mustard powder together. Set aside.
- Heat a large skillet, drizzle with a touch of oil, and cook breakfast sausage until brown. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Unroll pizza dough and, leaving about a 1/2-inch border, slather with 1/4 cup of the glaze, sprinkle with 1/2 cup of cheese, add sausage and another 1/2 cup of cheese. Roll from one long side to the other.
- Chill for 5-10 minutes in the freezer before cutting, seam side down, into 1-2 inch pieces. Pour remaining glaze on the bottom of prepared pan and pop 'buns'onto the glaze, cut side down.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes. Sprinkle with more cheese if desired.
- Cool slightly before flipping over onto a plate.
